General Education Goals
Students will learn about the characteristics of planets and solar systems and what makes a habitable planet in order to create their own models of a habitable planet, which students will use to create their own solar system models.

Rationale
Once students learn about planet characteristics, different planet types, solar system characteristics, and solar system types they will then be able to know what makes a planet habitable. Students will then be able to see how the conditions on Earth makes it suitable for life and the possibility of life on other planets.

Learner Description
Middle school aged students studying astronomy

Prerequisites
6th grade reading level

Subject Matter Description
Students will learn about solar systems and the planets of solar systems. The topics include: rotation, revolution, solar systems, tilt of axis, orbits, planet composition, planet atmosphere, and planet geology.

Learning Objectives
S2a - demonstrates understanding of structure and function in living systems
S3a - demonstrates an understanding of structure of Earth
S3c - demonstrates an understanding of Earth in the Solar System
S5c - Uses evidence from reliable sources to develop descriptions, explanations, and models
